Isabelle Arvers

The Centre for Digital Media is pleased to welcome Isabelle Arvers as an MDM Visiting Professor. This appointment was made possible through the help of the Consulat général de France in Vancouver, and Raynald Belay, Cultural attaché.

Arvers will be hosting lectures and masterclasses at the CDM in October focused on the interrelationship of web marketing, games, digital art and open source technologies. In collaboration with MDM students, she will also be developing a web documentary or interactive fiction in machinima (movies created from video game animations).

An independent media art curator, critic and author from France, Arvers has specialized in new media since 1993. She is also a graduate of the Institute of Political Studies in Aix-en-Provence and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Project Management of the Paris 8 University. Much of her critical work focuses on video and computer games, web animation, 'retrogaming' and machinima. Her curatorial work includes numerous digital media performances and exhibits across France, and at locations in Germany, Australia and Brazil.

Arvers has lead a number of past workshops on machinima, as well as WJ-S and Pleade, an online archive publishing application. These workshops explored machinima as a form of expression and a tool for creation, transforming video game play into a cinematic production.
