Last Friday, we held Cohort 6’s completion ceremony here at the Centre for Digital Media. 27 students graduated — which means that there will now be 161 graduates of the Master of Digital Media program!
Friends, family, members of the academic community and industry guests all came out to celebrate the students’ completion of the MDM program. Their official graduation occurs over the next two months as each student graduates from all of our partner institutions: BCIT, SFU, ECUAD and UBC. Their degree bears the seals of all four institutions and is signed by all four presidents:
The ceremony was held in the Hangar, where the MDM Director, Dr. Richard Smith, MC’d the event. Keynote speaker and Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield spoke on how the change in knowledge and culture is transforming human beings as a species. He encouraged the graduates to recognize the privilege and opportunities to be working in this field, as something meaningful for them personally and for the world.
A highlight of the event was Ben Bracamonte’s student speech. It was compelling and heartfelt — easily one of the best student speeches we’ve had. He used an X-statement: "Our diversity is our common ground," and admitted the program was not what he, and many of his classmates, expected but that they were braver, more attentive and more likely to think outside of the box because of the MDM faculty. He acknowledged the support of all of their friends and family to get them through the program and said that the connections and support of this cohort will extend beyond their residency at CDM.
After the ceremony, a reception was held in the CDM lobby. Family and friends celebrated with the grads, lots of photos were taken and everyone enjoyed delicious appies and CDM’s traditional chocolate fountain!
