The Fun Palace Carnival of Mixed Realities

The Fun Palace Carnival of Mixed Realities

Date

Tuesday, June 25, 2019 - 6:00pm to 10:00pm

Location

The Hangar, Centre for Digital Media --685 Great Northern Way , Vancouver , British Columbia (BC) Show on Google Maps

The Fun Palace Carnival of Mixed Realities is a curated site-specific installation consisting of several short interactive prototypes that propose new audience interactions with emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR). Our Carnival of Mixed Realities will be a provocative reinvention of the low fidelity sketches of Cedric Price (1964) and others, drawing from cybernetics to propose co-existing realities, 'real' and virtual. Situated in the Hangar at the Centre for Digital Media on June 25th 6-10pm, this free event will allow audiences to engage with dancers, actors, musicians and a host of real and virtual animations and objects.

Contributions will include a bio-sensing interactive VR Jellyfish installation, a number of real and virtual dancers contained within a geodesic dome and an automated user-controlled dance booth, multiple kinesthetic musical installations live and in VR, and AR viewing stations allowing audiences to peer into the past, present and potential future of the Centre for Digital Media’s hangar space.

Join us as audience, as participants and as actors in perpetuating a "social experiment" whose rich history beckons us to recreate the Fun Palace as a new "skeletal framework" (p. 80), as a lab, a technological iteration, a prototype for future-thinking collaboration, a place for reflection and criticality, a "drama of self-discovery" (Littlewood, 1964 as cited in Matthews, 2005, p. 76).

The Fun Palace at the Centre for Digital Media on Great Northern Way Campus; a satellite event to the American Society for Cybernetics Conference hosted by UBC on June 24th-26th.
