Sep 02, 2010 By webdev

Two new faculty members have joined the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) Program following their appointment by Program Director Jim Bizzocchi. Matt Toner, President of the Vancouver-based social media company Zeros 2 Heroes Media, and Simon Fraser University Associate Professor Steve DiPaola will be making their introductions to students as fall classes begin this week. Both accomplished instructors, Toner and DiPaola bring considerable industry experience and expertise in digital media design and production.
Matt Toner has been working in a number of areas within the digital media industry since the dot-com days. In the 1990s, he co-founded CanApple New Media, and was the founding executive of We Media Inc, an online community for persons with disabilities. Toner moved into the video-game industry in 2000, working as a designer and writer for Electronic Arts and Nokia. Before founding Zeros 2 Heroes Media (www.z2hmedia.com) - an award-winning social media and IP development company – Toner designed and led the initial, and highly successful Vancouver Film School Game Design stream. He also previously taught Game Design at SFU/SIAT and the Art Institute of Vancouver.
Steve DiPaola began working with 3D animation and web-based design in 1984 at the Computer Animation Research Group at the New York Institute of Technology. He later worked with the global advertising agency Saatchi and Saatchi and founded its independent innovation branch, Darwin Digital to explore new media and interactive projects. DiPaola is currently an associate Professor at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Art + Design, where he specializes in such areas as 3D Computer Graphics; Facial, Character, and Agent based Systems; and Interactive Narrative and Avatar Communities.
