Man Up Canada website project team awarded 2011 Gerri Sinclair Award for Innovation
Following a faculty review of project work by the 2011 graduating class, the Gerri Sinclair Award for Innovation in Digital Media was awarded to the ManKind team for its development of a social media marketing campaign for the Men’s Health Initiative of BC (MHIBC). The campaign offers a multi-faceted online experience that encourages men to take action concerning their health. Masters of Digital Media alumni Taylor Kachmarski, Al Sinoy, Jordan Braun, Nikhil Lewis and Ryan Klesc will share the $2000 award.
The Sinclair award recognizes either an individual student or student team in the MDM Program for work that holds great potential as a commercial media product; solves a problem using digital media technology; or offers an innovative methodology for creating digital media. The ManKind team was given top recognition by the Centre for its distinctive and creative marketing campaign and digital media solutions.
The project had its start with Dr. Larry Goldenberg, head of both MHIBC and the Department of Urology at UBC, who encountered challenges getting the message out about men’s health to males aged 18-35 year old. Once brought onboard, ManKind team made creative use of infographics, animation and video to update the message for this demographic - including production of a 30-second video screened on the Jumbotron at a Vancouver Canucks game.
"The effort the team provided was outstanding and warranted recognition," said Marcel Labbé, a marketing consultant for the Men’s Health Initiative of British Columbia (MHIBC) who worked closely with the team as project lead (watch the interview with Labbé above). "The program has been online for several months now and we see it expanding into a multi-year initiative."
The Sinclair award was set up in 2010 by Microsoft Corporation, and is given annually to honour the innovative contributions of Dr. Gerri Sinclair to the digital media industry, and specifically her innovative spirit as founding Director of the Masters in Digital Media Program.
