Master of Digital Media Program Graduates its 200th Student

The largest Master of Digital Media graduating class yet graduates this Friday, with 40 students formally receiving their degrees at SFU’s Convocation Ceremony. This is the 7th cohort to graduate and brings the total number of MDM alumni to 200, an amazing milestone in just 5 years.

The first MDM cohort graduated 21 students in 2009. Since then, the class size has doubled. The MDM program continues to grow and we’ve just accepted 60 students into the program for September 2014.

This year’s graduating class marks another milestone. Instead of having a small graduation ceremony here at the Centre for Digital Media, the students are participating in SFU’s Convocation Ceremony up on the mountain at SFU Burnaby, complete with the procession across SFU’s reflecting pond led by SFU’s world famous pipe band.

Although the formal ceremony takes place at SFU, the students actually graduate from and are alumni of all 4 of our partner institutions: UBC, SFU, BCIT and Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Their degree bears the seal of all 4 partner institutions.

While the official ceremony is Friday, most of Cohort 7 finished their final semester of the program in December, with the completion of their internships.  In recognition of the special cohort relationships that develop through their intensive time together at the Centre for Digital Media the students celebrated with anun-graduation party back in August before their internships started.

During the 8 intervening months since they left, the students have been working in all areas of the digital media industry, some of their jobs include: Producer at an indie game company, Product Manager at a information management company, Multi-Media Specialist at an ecommerce company, Learning Media Designer at an elearning company and a Digital Strategy & Communications Consultant for the brewery industry.

Director Richard Smith, on reaching this milestone in the program:

This Friday the MDM program will celebrate its 200th graduate. I am so proud to be associated with this program, which is less than 10 years old but already having a substantial impact on digital media leadership, education, and entrepreneurship here in BC and around the world. Along with all of the Faculty here we welcome these recent graduates and wish them all the best in their new careers.

Big congratulations to all of the grads! Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors.
