Movisphere, a multi-platform virtual world games arcade developed by students of the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) Program in collaboration with Telefonica, has been selected as an Official Honoree for the Integrated Mobile Experience category in The 13th Annual Webby Awards. The Official Honoree distinction is awarded to the top 15% of all work entered. Nearly 10,000 entries were received from more than 60 countries.
In the Integrated Mobile Experience category, Movisphere competed against the largest companies in the world. Fellow honorees include Nike, Nokia and Addidas.
This is the project’s second international award. In December 2008, Movisphere won top honours in the "Best New Business Opportunity" Category at Telefonica's Second Annual Research Fair.
Based on a microtransactional model, the Movisphere platform enables third party developers to upload multi-player games to an environment where users can play them on either PC or mobile device. This innovative and technically challenging arcade was built by an international collaborative team comprised of Masters of Digital Media graduate students Elmar dela Cruz, McKane Lee, Karthik Venkateshan and Bill Zhao, Telefonica project managers Juan Jorda del Amo and Alberto Lumbreras and MDM faculty Jeremy Gibson and Ian Verchere.
