The MDM Program is pleased to announce that due to the number of qualified submissions, six organizations have been short listed for The Big Push: MDM Social Change Initiative, three more than originally planned. The six finalists will now get the opportunity to pitch their initiative in person or via video conference at the Centre for Digital Media. The winner will be announced in mid-December. The following month, in January, they will start working with a five person MDM team to execute their high-impact, social change digital media project.
In total, more than 50 proposals were received from educators, activists, health care providers, artists and environmental groups regarding projects based in Canada and around the world. Diverse in nature, each submission spoke passionately about their cause, from bears to bogs, and community radio to community advocacy.
The number and variety of projects clearly demonstrated that digital media can touch upon all aspects of daily life and is instrumental as a tool in affecting change. The range of digital media applications made this poignantly apparent. They included: learning systems and devices, measurement and tracking tools, online curriculum delivery and development, social media savvy websites, mobile apps and games, ARGs, digital outreach tools, 3D virtual spaces, e-commerce fundraising solutions, data visualizations, predictive modeling platforms and multi-faceted information aggregators.
The Big Push: MDM Social Change Initiative is valued at $50,000 (in-kind) and includes a team of multidisciplinary graduate students, currently enrolled in Vancouver’s Masters of Digital Media Program. The MDM team will work with the chosen organization for a 13 week period to define and deliver a final digital-media based project.
