Top Centre for Digital Media News Stories of 2017

This past year was an exciting time at Centre for Digital Media. September marked the 10th anniversary of the Master of Digital Media program and we celebrated with a homecoming party for over 400 alumni, faculty and industry partners.

In addition, Centre for Digital Media’s Great Northern Way Trust appointed a new president, Emily Carr University’s new campus opened next door and a strategic plan was developed with a new mission and vision for CDM.

As we wrap up our busy year, we wanted to highlight the top news stories of 2017.

1. MDM Students Work with Finning Digital to Reduce Company’s Carbon Footprint

MDM students work on problems real industry clients are facing. The student project teams form a sort of research and development department for the clients to discover how digital media can solve a particular problem. Finning Digital, a division of Finning International, looked to the CDM to find innovative ways to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions from their heavy equipment. The MDM students worked on the ideation, design, and development of a proof of concept designed for Finning Digital.

2. MBA or MDM? What’s the Best Graduate Program For You?

One of the main perceived competitors to the MDM degree program are Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs. MBA’s have been around for far longer than the MDM and have been the staple for many when pursuing graduate level education in the business field. But the Master of Digital Media offers an alternative to a typical MBA and was specifically created to address the growing needs of the digital media and tech industry.

3. Student Pitch Project Walkies Get Accepted To Hax Hardware Accelerator

With an idea that started in their first term at the CDM (Fall 2015), Walkies Lab Inc develops a smart wearable toy for toddlers that is fun to play and enhances their motor and intellectual development. In the Spring of 2016, the group pitched Walkies as a project they wanted to develop further. After a successful pitch, the group continued to develop their product into a fourth term and as a venture internship. Suddenly at the end of their internship semester in December 2016 they vanished from the CDM campus. We caught up with Joyce from Walkies Lab Inc to figure out what’s been happening with the Walkies team since we last saw them on campus.
