What is an Industry Innovation Project?
Centre for Digital Media industry innovation projects connect organizations with multidisciplinary graduate teams to tackle real-world digital challenges. Over 12 weeks in Vancouver, teams work with faculty and industry partners to turn ideas into prototypes, proofs of concept and tangible solutions using industry-standard development processes. Projects begin January and May of each year.
An industry project can help if you have an idea you want to prove, a problem you need to solve, an emerging technology (AI, XR, etc.) you want to explore, or a prototype or proof of concept you need before making a larger investment.
How It Works
- Book a Consultation: Email us to connect with our partnerships team.
- Submit Your Proposal by:
- September 30 for a January–April collaboration
- January 31 for a May–August collaboration
- Review: CDM reviews and shortlists project proposals.
- Matching: Accepted projects are matched with a multidisciplinary student team and faculty supervisor.
- Kick-Off: Teams connect with partners to launch the project.
Ready to get started? Send us an email with an idea or challenge you’re looking to solve, and we’ll connect with you to explore what’s possible.
What Partners Gain
Partners bring the challenge and domain expertise, while playing an active role throughout the project, gaining new ways to envision their ideas through:
- Weekly meetings to track progress and share feedback
- Ideation sessions to co-create and challenge assumptions
- User testing to validate ideas with real users
The outcome: A prototype, proof of concept, technical demo, digital product concept, or interactive experience that expands beyond what partners imagined possible. Partners retain full ownership of all intellectual property generated through the project.
