Canadian Video Game Museum

Back to Projects

Did you know that Canada has been involved in game development since before the industry began? Or that some of the largest franchises in the video game industry were either created in or are primarily developed in Canada? Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Need for Speed, Mass Effect and indie hits like Celeste, Cuphead, Balatro were all created here!

With such a long and storied history, it seems fitting that there is a place to learn more about it, and celebrate the large cultural and economic impact Canada has had on the world through this medium. The Canadian Video Game Museum (CVGM) is aiming to address this need and become a truly world-class destination and authority in video games in Canada.

We see a Canadian video game museum as needing 3 critically important things to achieve this goal:

1) The stories of how these Canadian games and hardware came to be 2) Crafting experiences through gamification and digital interactive media that are both informative and engaging 3) Research and firsthand accounting which will inform the content and be accessible to others in the future

These are points that will be unique to this museum in the current landscape of video game exhibits in addition to being the first physical video game museum located in Canada and the first with a focus on Canadian video industries and game content.

Our first step is creating a temporary exhibit testing this digital media component which will allow us to identify solutions and challenges to creating an engaging and educational experience.
