AI Tool for Disability Confidence with CCRW

Back to Projects

Team SunnySide is a multidisciplinary collective of designers and developers from the Centre for Digital Media and Simon Fraser University. Driven by the belief that technology should dismantle barriers, we unite technical precision with user-centered empathy. By bringing together diverse perspectives across design and technology, we investigate how AI-driven tools can simplify complex information and support more inclusive decision-making, putting care and equity at the core of every digital experience we construct.

In partnership with the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (CCRW), our project addresses the practical challenges employers and HR professionals face when navigating accommodations and inclusive hiring. By weaving CCRW’s Disability Confidence Toolkit directly into day-to-day employer workflows, this interactive AI companion takes the guesswork out of accessibility. The tool transforms abstract guidelines into practical, everyday choices, helping workplaces move past uncertainty and approach inclusion with greater understanding and empathy.

The outcome of this 12-week initiative is a functional, highly accessible prototype integrated into CCRW's existing digital toolkit platform. While engineered for long-term sustainability with Salesforce and Microsoft Azure pathways, the tool focuses deeply on the human experience. By utilizing interactive content and subtle gamification, the project turns resource navigation into an engaging journey, equipping Canadian employers with the genuine confidence to foster truly equitable work environments.
