Asymmetric Cooperative VR Game with Coal Car Studio

Back to Projects

Coal Car Studio is collaborating with the team to develop Crossworld Chronicles, a cooperative virtual reality (VR) game prototype focused on asymmetric gameplay and role-based collaboration. The purpose of the project is to test whether this asymmetric design is engaging for players, and to confirm that Coal Car Studio’s existing technology stack from Fruit Golf can be successfully applied to a new genre.

Crossworld Chronicles combines dungeon exploration with strategic defence mechanics where players take on interconnected roles with different perspectives. Explorers experience the game in first-person VR, while Strategists operate from a god-view, top-down perspective. These roles are designed to work together, encouraging communication and coordination as players progress through the game and make shared decisions.

Our team will focus on building and refining a playable vertical slice through iterative design and playtesting. Development will be carried out in Unity, using VR interaction frameworks and adapting Coal Car Studio’s existing systems for input and world interaction. Special attention will be given to onboarding and role clarity to ensure that players can quickly understand their responsibilities and collaborate effectively.

The outcome of the project will be a playable VR game prototype on Quest 3, featuring a single themed realm with a focused gameplay loop, deployable defences, varied enemies, and a cooperative mini-boss encounter that demonstrates asymmetric role interaction in practice.
