Healthcare Website with Providence Health Care
Back to ProjectsUnderstanding lab results can be confusing and overwhelming for patients, especially when results are presented in raw clinical language without context. Providence Health Care has tasked our team with exploring how generative AI can improve the way lab results are communicated to patients—making them more accessible, understandable, and actionable.
Currently, patients often rely heavily on healthcare providers to interpret their results, which can lead to delays, anxiety, and a lack of empowerment in managing their own health. Our project aims to address this gap by designing an AI-powered prototype that provides plain-language summaries, categorizes results using a color-coded system (green/yellow/red), and offers non-diagnostic, supportive recommendations.
To tackle this challenge, our team will conduct user research and stakeholder interviews to identify pain points, study similar tools, and align the feature scope with client goals. We will simulate integration with BC’s health systems (e.g., CareConnect) to demonstrate feasibility, while respecting privacy and data protection. The AI model we selected is GPT-4.1, hosted securely on Microsoft Azure’s Canadian servers to meet compliance expectations during the prototyping phase.
Our final deliverable will be a high-fidelity, clickable prototype that highlights key features such as biomarker explanation, patient-friendly summaries, and contextual recommendations. While not yet live or integrated into real systems, this prototype will serve as a proof of concept to support further development and internal alignment at Providence, showcasing the value of generative AI in healthcare communication.
