Revealing the Art of Balance with the Canadian Video Game Museum
Back to ProjectsCreating a competitive video game requires a delicate, complex act of mathematical and experiential balancing. This is a design process that is crucial to a game's health but is often entirely invisible to the average player. When a new system or mechanic is introduced into a game, it can easily disrupt or harmonize the entire competitive ecosystem, yet the public rarely sees the intricate, high-stakes trial and error that happens behind the scenes.
We are collaborating with the Canadian Video Game Museum to address this gap in public understanding by developing a unique, educational museum installation experience that celebrates and demystifies the complex realities of game development. The project is an interactive, rapid-play digital installation designed for upcoming public exhibitions. The standalone exhibit features a simplified core game loop paired with an intuitive customization interface, allowing visitors to step into the shoes of a game designer to define and tune a combatant's attributes. By utilizing a mixture of a metagame lens to learn more about the game industry and game simulations, players engage with automated battles and clear data visualizations. This enables them to instantly witness the real-time ripple effects of their balancing choices against existing archetypes, using gamification principles to elevate public appreciation and spark deeper conversation around the medium of games.
To bring this vision to life, our interdisciplinary team brings together dedicated expertise in game design, development, product/project management, and art. By leveraging these diverse disciplines, we are uniquely equipped to translate complex mathematical frameworks into an accessible, intuitive museum experience.
