3D Tactical RPG Remake Prototype with Beyond Capture

KrFV Studio is collaborating with Beyond Capture to create a 3D remake prototype of Flame Dragon Knights 2, a classic Chinese turn-based tactical RPG. The project focuses on translating Level 3 of the original 2D game into a playable Unreal Engine vertical slice while preserving its nostalgic identity, grid-based strategy, character roles, and old-school UI/UX structure.

The key challenge is to adapt a classic 2D tactical experience into 3D without losing the clarity, pacing, and charm that define the original game. Systems such as unit selection, movement range, attack range, turn-based combat, and menu-driven interaction must remain readable and intuitive in a 3D environment. At the same time, the prototype needs to demonstrate enough visual and production value to support Beyond Capture’s longer-term vision for a potential remake and future pitching opportunities.

To address this challenge, the team will conduct original game analysis, tactical RPG reference research, UI/UX deconstruction, concept art exploration, playtesting, and Unreal Engine prototyping. The production will focus on a realistic vertical slice, including a 3D level environment, selected character and enemy assets, tactical movement, basic combat interactions, UI mockups, and supporting design documentation.

The anticipated outcome is a focused playable prototype that demonstrates how Flame Dragon Knights 2 could be reimagined as a modern 3D tactical RPG while remaining faithful to its original spirit. Final deliverables will include the Unreal prototype, research insights, playtest findings, art and UI/UX documentation, and a roadmap for future development.
